Opening a Smoothie Factory: The Steps

Although the process of opening a store can seem overwhelming if you’re new to franchising, we’ve got it down to an art. From start to finish, everything can be broken down into three phases. From signing to opening, you can anticipate 6 to 12 months.

1) Getting Acquainted

The process starts with candidate qualification. We get to know you, you get to know us, and together, we figure out whether it’s a good fit. From there, you’ll receive our franchise disclosure document (FDD) and move on to the application and discovery day. If all goes well, we’ll be signing a franchise agreement and moving on to phase 2…

2) Charging Ahead

Phase 2 is a busy time, and it starts with a kick-off call between you, development, and field support. You can look forward to a location search and site approval, along with business plan development and goal-setting. With a firm plan in place, you’ll hire the architect and contractor, get the necessary permits, and construction will begin.

3) The Finishing Touches

With everything in place back home, you’ll enjoy our  industry-leading instruction at one of our training restaurants. Then, you’ll receive additional training in your own restaurant to make sure everything’s ready for the big day. After that, it’s time to open the doors and start making guests happy!

What are the franchise fees and royalty rates?
$15,000 for each traditional location. Military veterans receive a 50% discount on a traditional location. For a non-traditional location, the initial franchise fee is just $7,500. Our ongoing royalty fee is 5% of gross sales and your required contribution to the brand development and advertising fund is 2% of sales with an additional 1% required to be spent by you on local promotion.
What is the typical cost to build a Smoothie Factory?
Per our current FDD, the range is $227,000 – $320,700 for a traditional store, typically in a strip center. Non-traditional locations, such as kiosk and food courts in malls, range from $132,000 – $283,500 per our current FDD. These estimates include construction, equipment, permits, architectural fees, franchise fees, initial marketing expenses, initial inventory, signage, miscellaneous expense, and 3 months of operating capital. Construction and remodeling costs vary widely, depending upon the location, design, configuration and condition of the premises, the condition and configuration of existing services and facilities such as air conditioning, electrical and plumbing, and the terms of your lease.
Does Smoothie Factory provide financing?
No, but we do have franchise financing companies that we work with who we can refer you to. Smoothie Factory is registered with the SBA.
Can I secure a territory to develop multiple Smoothie Factory locations?
Yes, if you have the operational and business experience to manage an area and will commit to develop a minimum of 3-5 stores depending on the size of the territory.
What is the typical size of a Smoothie Factory store?
Ideally, between 800 and 1000 square feet plus a patio, with ample parking. Drive thru endcap spaces are ideal if available. Non-traditional locations, such as kiosk and food courts in malls, range from 400 to 800 square feet.
Do I need to be involved in the operations?
Your Smoothie Factory® franchise must be supervised on-premises by a Managing Owner. If the franchisee is an individual or general partnership, the Managing Owner will be the individual franchisee or one of the general partners. If the franchisee is a business entity, the Managing Owner must hold at least a 10% equity interest in the entity. The Managing Owner must successfully complete our initial training program, must devote full time efforts to the management and operation of the franchised business. If you operate multiple Smoothie Factory stores, of if your Managing Owner will not devote full time efforts to the management and operation of the Store then, in addition to the Managing Owner, you must appoint an individual to serve as your Key Person and will manage the day to day operations of the Store. Your Key Person must also attend initial training with you.
What are the requirements to become a franchisee?
We want to see our franchisees succeed, so restaurant or comparable retail experience is strongly preferred, along with good knowledge of the local market and experience in building and managing teams. Financially, you’ll need a good credit rating and at least $200,000 net worth and $100,000 cash available for investment.
What are the hours of operation?
Typical hours are from 7am-10pm 7 days per week. This varies by trade area and shopping center.
What training is provided?
Certification training takes 9 business days in a training store in Dallas, TX. Onsite store opening support includes 4 days of crew training, 1 day of live “friends and family” training, and 5 days of post opening training.
How long will it take to open my Smoothie Factory location?
Site identification and lease negotiation averages 6 months from signing of a franchise agreement. Once you take possession of the premises it generally takes about 12-20 weeks to design, build, and open. This varies significantly by municipality and property.
